Marcos Castán: Magnificat Excerpt from a Compline Service September 25, 2016 Trinity Memorial Church, Binghamton, NY CandleChant: An Ancient tradition growing in popularity: based on the medieval service of Compline (prayer and meditation immediately before bed), CandleChant is entirely sung by a choir in a candlelit church. There is no accompaniment: just the beauty of the voices singing medieval chant as well as beautiful harmonies. Prayers and scriptures are all sung by members of the choir. In the early 1970’s, the Episcopal Cathedral of Saint Mark in Seattle began offering Compline at 9 pm on Sundays. Soon 500 gathered to enjoy this beautiful service sung by the light of hundreds of candles. The service here at Trinity was offered long after sunset, with the sanctuary lit only by candles placed along the center aisle and on the church's chancel, placing much of the sanctuary in near total darkness. See http://www.episcopalchurch.org/librar... for additional details on the Compline service.
