Christina Taylor, Soprano, accompanied by Timothy E. Smith, Organist Lyrics: "Lully, lulla, thou tiny little child, By, By lully, lullay. O sisters too, how may we do for to preserve this day this poor youngling for whom we do sing. Herod, the king, in his raging, charged he hath this day his men of might in his own sight, all young children to slay. That woe is me, poor child for thee! And ever morn and day, for thy parting nor say nor sing, by, by lully, lullay". Coventry Canons was composed by Richard Porterfield for and premiered during a service of Lessons and Carols for the Epiphany, offered at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, Binghamton NY, Epiphany 2019. Coventry Canons is set in the context of the Slaying of the Innocents (also known as the Massacre of the Innocents) as described in the New Testament's Gospel of Matthew. Coventry Canons reflects a mother's woe over the impending loss of her son as a result of King Herod the Great's order to slay all children under the age of two in Bethlehem, which in turn caused Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to flee to Egypt. The earliest known setting of this text dates from the 16th century, when it was performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called "The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors," eventually giving rise to the Coventry Carol.
